A shared-learning from the mosque caretaker (maid) – Belajar dari marbot masjid

Ikhlas like a waterfall
Ikhlas like a waterfall

I received this posting below from my best friend who sent me through whatsapp. I want to share in this site so many people possibly to receive a good benefit by reading this article to increase our quality of life, based on Islam way.

Here is the story:

There were to old friends that haven’t met for a quite long time, Ahmad and Zaenal. Ahmad is clever, intelligent but, in the sense of financial, he was under economically disadvantaged even the situation tended to the ability of his parents to support Ahmad’s financial. While Zaenal was a friend of the ‘middle class’.

After quite a long time apart, they just met incidentally in a special place, at Mosque toilet corridor.

Based on the appearance, Zaenal, looked as a successful middle-class manager, i.e.: dapper, elegant but keep his piety.

He had a habit. Anytime he was out of town, he needed to spend his time to to stop at the mosque in that city, for a dutied or sunnah prayer.

As usual, he arrived in the city. He was looking for a mosque. He stopped his car and and rushed into the mosque for a prayer.

It was there that he discovered Ahmad. Zaenal was quite stunned when he met Ahmad. As he knew his friend, even though his background was not so rich, but he was smart and full with mercy.

Zaenal did not think when decades later he found Ahmad as mosque caretaker – a mosque maid!

“Sorry,” he rebuked the maid. “You are Ahmad, right? Ahmad who was my junior high school fellow?”.

Ahmad did not recognize Zaenal at the beginning, but soon later the two embraced. “You are so cool huh Mas …steady …”. Zaenal was seen still of wearing a tie. His arms were folded in preparation for ablution (wudhu), “Ah, mediocre …”. Ahmad continued.

Zaenal felt a pity when he saw Ahmad was holding a mop, cleaning the mosque. Typical a mosque maid. His pants rolled up, and wore a black velveted hat.

“Mad … Here’s my card …”.

Ahmad saw at the card, “hmhmhm area manager …. Wuah, you are really so  cool.”

“Mad, later I finish my prayer, could we talk? I am sorry, but in my office there is a better job than just a maid in this mosque, sorry … “.

Ahmad smiled. He nodded. “Thank you so … we’ll talk later. Just finish your prayer. I also completed the clean-up work before … yes, we can find a comfortable place and talk “.

While doing ablution (wudhu), Zaenal could not believe to what he saw. Why a smart student like Ahmad then was thrown from a normal life. Yes, although there is nothing wrong with a job as mosque caretaker, but maid … ah, his mind was not able to justify it easily. Zaenal lamented the condition of this country who was not able to provide a proper work for anyone who actually have talent and intelligence but poor.

Once again Zaenal passed Ahmad who was doing cleaning. If Ahmad was doing this work in an office, then he would be called not maid. But “office boy”.

Without realizing it, there was a prayer at the Zaenal’s back. They were prayer as one jamaah. Zaenal was doing a sunnah prayer. He had done the dutied prayer at the previous mosque before. Zaenal had glanced. “Perhaps this is his Ahmad …”, he muttered. Zaenal was completing his brief prayer. He wanted to talk to Ahmad.

“Sir,” suddenly young people who pray behind reprimanded.

“Yes, Mas ..?”

“Sir, have you known Mr. Haji Ahmad before …?”

“Haji Ahmad …?”

“Yes, Haji Ahmad …”

“Haji Ahmad which one …?”

“the one who you just talked to before you were taking your prayer …”

“Oh … Ahmad … Yeah. I know him. He used to be my friend in junior high. Just he had his pilgrimage to Mecca, heh? “

“He did his pilgrimage already sir, before he built this mosque … “.

The sentence was so flat, but enough to ‘slap’ Zaenal … the pilgrimage … then built this mosque …

This young man then added, “He is a great man sir and humble as well”. I am the original maid for this mosque. I am his employee. He is who built this mosque, sir on his own land as his charity (wakaf) for community.  He built up his own mosque, as the mosque is devoted to those, especially traveller, who want to pray. Sir, have you seen the material store next to the mosque? It belongs to Haji Ahmad … However he prefers to spend his time here, in his mosque as his favorite, weird though. Sometime he take over my position as the mosque cleaner, as you saw him before. Because of my voice is nice, sometimes I am asked to recite Kuran and a call (Azan) for prayer times … “.

Wuah, Zaenal felt confused. He did not have to say alot.

Then, how do we think?

If Ahmad is us, maybe when we met an old friend who is looking at us while cleaning toilet, we immediately tell them that it is not actually our position. And if then our old friend thought that we are the real maid mosque, then we will deny and then explain in detail such and such. So that our friends know that we are here and we are the one who built this mosque.

But we are not Haji Ahmad. Haji Ahmad survived the ravages of charity, because he did not deny his friend’s perception. He stayed cool and took it easy. He felt there was no need to explain, anything. He, then, let God ‘told’  who he really was …

Subhaanallaah ….

Cerdas. Tapi dikisahkan kurang beruntung secara ekonomi. Sedangkan Zaenal adalah sahabat yang biasa-biasa saja. Namun keadaan orang tuanya mendukung karir dan masa depan Zaenal.

Setelah terpisah cukup lama, keduanya bertemu.

“Maaf,” katanya menegor sang merbot. “Kamu Ahmad kan? Ahmad kawan SMP saya dulu?”.

Yang ditegor tidak kalah mengenali. Lalu keduanya berpelukan. “Keren sekali Kamu ya Mas… Manteb…”. “Ah, biasa saja…”.

Zaenal menaruh iba. Ahmad dilihatnya sedang memegang kaen pel. Khas merbot sekali. Celana digulung, dan peci
8 didongakkan sehingga jidat hitamnya terlhat jelas.

“Mad… Ini kartu nama saya…”.

Ahmad melihat. “Manager Area…”. Wuah, bener-bener keren.

“Mad, nanti habis saya shalat, kita ngobrol ya.

Air wudhu membasahi wajahnya…

“Iya Mas..?”

“Pak, Bapak kenal emangnya sama Haji Ahmad…?”

“Haji Ahmad…?”

“Ya, Haji Ahmad…”

“Haji Ahmad yang mana…?”

“Itu, yang barusan ngobrol sama Bapak…”

“Oh… Ahmad… Iya. Kenal. Kawan saya dulu di SMP. Emangnya udah haji dia?”

“Dari dulu udah haji Pak. Dari sebelumnya bangun ini masjid…”.

Kalimat itu begitu datar. Tapi cukup menampar hatinya Zaenal… Dari dulu sudah haji… Dari sebelumnya bangun masjid ini…

Anak muda ini kemudian menambahkan, “Beliau orang hebat Pak. Tawadhu’. Saya lah yang merbot asli masjid ini. Saya karyawannya beliau.

Tapi kita bukan Haji Ahmad. Dan Haji Ahmad bukannya kita. Ia selamat dari kerusakan amal, sebab ia cool saja. Tenang saja. Adem.

Subhaanallaah….
